DAFM Information (Republic of Ireland)

Some sellers on The Aviary Hub may be legally required to register with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) before selling pets in the Republic of Ireland.

Who may need to register

  • Anyone who sells or supplies six or more pet animals in a calendar year may need to register under S.I. No. 681 of 2019.
  • “Supply” includes giving an animal away (including free rehomes), whether or not it was advertised.
  • Official DAFM registration itself is free and must usually be renewed each year.
  • Premises used in connection with sale/supply may also need to be on the Register of Premises.
  • Registered sellers must keep certain records (generally for at least three years).

What every ROI pet advert should include

Under Irish advertising rules for pet animals, adverts should include at least:

  • the age of the animal;
  • the country of origin of the animal;
  • the seller’s DAFM registration number, where that person is required to be registered;
  • for dogs only: the microchip code (dogs are not a permitted category on this Platform, so this does not apply here).

Platform role (ROI)

  • The Aviary Hub may request legally required seller and animal information, and may restrict listings until it is supplied.
  • We keep an internal count toward the 6+ threshold per seller across qualifying categories — this helps our platform rules; it does not replace your legal duty.
  • The Aviary Hub does not grant DAFM approval, and does not confirm that a seller is compliant merely because an advert is published.
  • If you are unsure whether registration applies to you, check the official DAFM guidance.

Poultry (ROI)

Poultry listings require a valid Poultry Keeper / Flock Number before publishing. This is provided by the seller and is not independently verified by The Aviary Hub — you remain responsible for holding any registration that applies to you.

Birds of prey and parrots (ROI listings)

Some birds of prey and some parrot species are listed under CITES and/or wildlife trade rules, which can require documentation before sale or transfer. Listings in Birds of Prey and Parrots are held for manual review before publishing. You remain responsible for holding whatever documentation applies to your specific animal.
