Trader and Consumer Information

The Aviary Hub requires every seller to make clear whether they are acting as a trader/business (our Registered Pet Seller, Registered Charity, or approved Pet Shop account types) or as a private individual (our Casual Seller account type).

A seller is responsible for choosing the correct status when registering, and we may reclassify or restrict an account where the available evidence indicates a person is acting commercially while registered as private.

When a trader sells to a consumer

Mandatory Irish and EU consumer protections may apply, including:

  • clear pre-contract information about the item or animal;
  • accurate pricing;
  • conformity of the goods/animal with what was described, and remedies where they do not conform;
  • delivery obligations, where delivery is offered;
  • cancellation rights, where applicable to the transaction;
  • proper complaint handling.

When you buy from a private seller

Private (person-to-person) transactions generally do not carry the same statutory consumer protections as buying from a trader. Buyers should factor this into their own research and inspection before agreeing to buy – see our Buyer & Seller Safety page.

A trader must not present themselves as a private seller in order to avoid these obligations. If you believe a seller has misrepresented their status, please report it.

Digital platform tax reporting (DAC7)

EU rules on administrative cooperation in taxation (Council Directive (EU) 2021/514, known as DAC7) may require online platforms to collect certain information about sellers and report it to the tax authorities, where a seller’s activity on the platform exceeds thresholds set by that law. Where this applies to The Aviary Hub, we will ask affected sellers for the information required by law and will explain this clearly at the time. Sellers remain responsible for their own tax obligations regardless of any platform reporting.
