Most sellers on classifieds sites are genuine, but a few warning signs are worth knowing before you send any money.
Common warning signs
- A seller who won’t let you see the animal in person, or makes excuses to avoid a real viewing.
- Pressure to decide or pay quickly, especially with a deposit before you’ve seen the animal.
- A price that’s unusually low for the species/breed, with a story explaining the urgency.
- A request to pay by an untraceable method, or to a third party unconnected to the advert.
- Stock-looking photos that also appear (search them) on other sites or adverts.
What to do instead
- Always view the animal in person, at the seller’s actual location, before agreeing anything.
- Ask to see relevant paperwork (microchip, DAFM registration where applicable) in person, not just by message.
- Use the Report advert button on any listing that concerns you – our team reviews every report.
