Buying a bird – whether your first or your fifth – is easier to get right with a few basic checks in place.
Before you view
- Research the species properly first – see our Knowledge Centre care guides.
- Ask the seller about the bird’s age, history, and whether it’s hand-reared or parent-reared.
- Confirm the seller’s asking price and any collection/delivery arrangements up front.
At the viewing
- Always view the bird in person, ideally in the environment it’s been kept in.
- Check the bird looks alert, has clean plumage, and is eating normally.
- Ask about DAFM registration where it applies – see our DAFM Information page.
After you buy
- Arrange a check-up with an avian-experienced vet – see our Avian Vets directory.
