Whether you are a breeder, a small-scale seller, or rehoming a bird you can no longer keep, a clear, honest advert helps the right buyer find your bird and helps keep the wider marketplace trustworthy for everyone.

What to include in your advert

  • An accurate description of the bird’s age, sex (if known) and any relevant history
  • Honest information about temperament, hand-tameness, and any known health issues
  • Clear photos of the actual bird being advertised
  • Your general location, so buyers know roughly where collection would take place

Registration considerations

If you supply six or more pet animals in a calendar year, you are required to register with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) – see our DAFM Information page for details. This site also asks sellers to complete an annual declaration as part of that process.

Welfare-first selling

  • Only advertise a bird once it is genuinely ready to leave (appropriately weaned/independent for its species)
  • Be willing to answer buyer questions honestly, even if the answer might put some buyers off
  • Meet buyers in person and let them see the bird before any payment changes hands
  • See our Animal Welfare Policy for the standards expected of every seller on this site

Not sure your bird’s species-specific needs to describe accurately in your advert? See our Knowledge Centre care guides for reference.

This is general information, not veterinary advice. Every bird is an individual, and needs can vary by exact species, age and health. Always confirm specifics with an avian-experienced vet before making husbandry decisions – see our Avian Vets directory.
